If you just watched the evening news and are fussing and fuming about bad guys, the evil, despicable, dastardly deeds they are doing and seemingly getting away with, you need to calm down, chill out and read Psalm 37 in God’s Word, the Bible.

I can’t speak for you, but I can be honest about me. My holy (sometimes unholy!) dander can fly in a hurry when I see and hear of injustice and the suffering evil people cause. Evildoers and their evil deeds rile me up and make me fighting mad. Yes, I am a Christian. I love God and goodness. I also hate the devil and evil.

Psalm 37 boosts my faith, encouraging, fortifying and assuring my heart that evil and evildoers don’t win in the long run.  The Psalmist opens this song in verses1-2 this way. Do not fret because of evildoers, be not envious toward wrongdoers. For they will wither quickly like the grass, and fade like the green herb.”

King David was surrounded by evil men. David chose not to be troubled or tripped up by the bad guys. He decided for himself and tells us not to fret (worry, fuss, fume, complain or whine) about evildoers. Why? Two reasons. First, fretting leads to evildoing (verse 8).  Secondly, God will take care of evil people (verse 22)

Honestly, sometimes it is easy to envy evildoers because they seem to have a lot in terms of power, fame, fortune, influence, opportunity and privilege. Evildoers seem to have it made in the proverbial shade. But according to God’s Word, their shaded, shady life is a deceptive illusion. In actuality, the bad guys shade is an increasingly darkening shadow of judgment hanging over their heads.

The day will come when bad guys will wish that they hadn’t been so bad and they had behaved a whole lot better!

Let’s be honest; envy is a flesh thing. Being envious or jealous is not a fruit of the Spirit. When tempted to be envious of evildoers, you and I have to look to the Holy Spirit to help us focus on trust in the Lord that He will deal with evil on His terms.

Psalm 37 ramps up my courage in Christ because David writes about the good that comes to the good guys as well as the bad that comes to bad guys.

Good News For Good Guys

  • Good guys who wait for the Lord will inherit the land. Verse 9
  • Good guys will delight themselves in abundant prosperity Verse 11
  • Good guys will be sustained by the Lord. Verse 17
  • Good guys inheritance will be forever. Verse 18
  • Good guys will have abundance in days of famine. Verse 19
  • Good guys steps are established by the Lord. Verse 23
  • Good guys and their children will be cared for all their life. Verse 25
  • Good guys are preserved by the Lord forever.  Verse 28

Now that is really good news for God’s good guys! On the other hand, there is not-so-good-news for bad guys who do not reverence and obey God.

Bad News For Bad Guys

  • Bad guys will fade away like the grass. Verses 1-2
  • Bad guys will be fatally wounded by their own weapons.  Verse 15
  • Bad guys will disappear to never be seen again.  Verse 10
  • Bad guys will perish and vanish like smoke Verse 20
  • Bad guys will be cut off from life.  Verse 9
  • Bad guys arms will be broken. Verse 17
  • Bad guys and their evil deeds will ultimately be destroyed. Verse 38

There are times when Steve Roll wants to help the Lord out when giving bad guys what they deserve. But I have learned this: The Lord God Almighty, to whom all men must answer to, will punish evil better than I could ever do.

“Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” Romans 12:17-19

When room is made for God’s wrath to come upon evildoers, I don’t want to be anywhere near that room!

Arrogant smirks will be wiped off deluded, deceiving, corrupt men and women’s faces. Liars and their lies will be revealed. Evil will be exposed for what it really is by the light of truth.  Unjust gain will be stripped away from those who ripped off the innocent and poor. Wrongs will be made right. Those who call evil good and good evil will find out that good trumps evil.

David concludes Psalm 37 with these words to the righteous in verses 39-40.

“The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; He is their strength in time of trouble. And the Lord helps them and delivers them; He delivers them from the wicked, and saves them, because they take refuge in Him.”

Take heart fellow believer in Christ. Evildoers,  bad guys and gals don’t win. Never have, never will. The good guys, those who are in right relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ do!

Psalm 37:13 says ‘The Lord laughs at him (the evildoer) for He sees his day is coming.”

Instead of worrying about bad guys, maybe we should laugh at them like God does. Their day is coming!

Choose every day to live like one of God’s good guys and leave the bad guys to God.

“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who shows to the Spirit shall from the Spirit reap eternal life.” Galatians 6:7-8

“Depart from evil and do good so you will abide forever.” Psalm 37:27

A Word For Your Week:
Do not fret because God will get the bad guys.
