Acting Like God’s People

Every single day in America we hear more bad news than good news.

Bad news sells. The downside of life is popular with the populace, racking up high viewer ratings. The most alarming fact of all is this: bad news is getting bad-der and bad-der!

Talking bobble-heads, the media darlings who flatter themselves with their empty-headed, nonsensical, idle talk, pride themselves on keeping you and me perched on the edge of our seats, anticipating with bated breath the next up-to-the-minute, breaking news that is deliberately and deviously designed to discourage, demoralize and immobilize good people from believing and doing good (that was a long sentence wasn’t it!).

Air-brushed, perfectly groomed, professionally polished doomsayers and dooms day-ers are having their day and say. Panic peddlers and fear mongers spew their culture killing poisons of anxiety, fear and approaching apocalyptic size disaster. From coast to coast, merchants of misery mercilessly stalk our land with spirit-deflating messages of impending, imminent doom and gloom.

So what is a Christian to do during turbulent, trying times like these? I believe we should show some moral courage to a world that has lost its way.

First, we should not react like the unbelieving men and women of this world.

The spirit of fear is running rampant in our society. There is a herd mentality that is dangerous right now. How easy it is for non-thinking, media mesmerized, unbelieving men (and sad to say many professing Christians) to follow the pied pipers of pessimism as they lead the naïve crowd over the foreboding cliff of fear into the abyss of hopelessness and despair.

What is happening is not about politics, or economics, personalities or personal preferences. We are engaged in spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:10-20). The war being waged by Satan’s forces of darkness and unrighteousness rages against God’s forces of light and righteousness.

Satan, a thief who steals kills and destroys, is stirring up the souls of men.  The evil one’s primary goal is to keep people from putting their faith and hope in God. Worldly men and women, who walk by sight and not by faith, will inevitably fall into the devil’s traps. According to I John 2:15-29, those who love the world and the things of this world do not know God’s love and are in danger of passing away with this world.

Believers in Christ must vigilantly guard against following the noise, hype and deception of the unbelieving crowd in our culture.

Secondly, we need to respond by standing up and acting like God’s people.

It takes moral courage to take a stand in an immoral society. Paul nails for us our response to current cultural conditions. His closing words to the Corinthian Christians are appropriate and applicable to our day.

Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.”
I Corinthians 16:13-14

Note very carefully what Paul exhorts Christians to do when surrounded by a society drowning in a sea of falsehood, godlessness, immorality, confusion, and chaos.

BE ON THE ALERT! Stay awake at your post Christian. Do not be lulled to sleep like others. Keep your spiritual eyes open wide. Look past me. Look to the Lord. Do not be blind-sided and blinded by those who are spiritually blind and leading gullible people into the gutter of unbelief.

STAND FIRM IN THE FAITH. Dig in. Stand your ground. Do not budge on what you believe. Not one inch! Trust God with all your heart. He is your source. He is in control. Do not compromise your convictions. On the contrary, stand tall with faith while others fall in fear around you. The world needs Christians to be who they say they are.

ACT LIKE MEN, BE STRONG. Behave like believers. If you confess and profess Christ, then act like Jesus Christ who lives in you. Refuse to whine, to blame, to run, to hide out, or to suck your thumb. Stand up boldly and be a man or woman of God. Let this world know that you belong to another world, the real world, the Kingdom of Almighty God. Be strong in the Lord and the strength of His might in the midst of the weakness of this world.

LET ALL THAT YOU DO BE DONE IN LOVE. Bottom line: Do the above with God’s healing, redeeming and restoring love in your heart. In times of crisis, godless people look to godly people to find God. Why? Because Christians know God’s love and the truth of God’s love sets people free!

How To Act Like God’s Man or Woman

Refuse…
  • To get caught up in the whirlwinds of worry.
  • To push the panic button.
  • To think the worst.
  • To look to the world as your source.
  • To believe the lies and deception that is being spread.
  • To shrink back from your faith and cave in to fear.
  • To surrender leadership of your life and family to anyone or anything other than the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • To be silent when hurting people are seeking to hear the voice of God.
Choose…
  • To pray and wait upon the Lord.
  • To be still and listen for God’s still, small voice.
  • To stand on God’s promises to provide for you.
  • To stand firm in faith and stand up for truth.
  • To believe God to turn the worst into the best.
  • To be unashamed of and completely loyal to the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • To be ready to help hurting people find Jesus as their Savior and Lord.
  • To believe, that in Christ, the best is always yet to come!

Right now, today, and every day is the time for committed Christians to act like they belong to Jesus Christ.

Man’s hope is not in man. Hope, help, healing, health, happiness, fulfillment, prosperity, joy, and most of all, eternal life that transcends this soul-weary, lost world is found only through a personal relationship with God’s Son Jesus.

Now is the time for Christians to witness in the power of the Holy Spirit to fearful, hopeless people who are searching for real answers. Now is the time for believers to reach out to unbelievers with the unconditional love of Jesus Christ, and watch God bring His peace and purpose to people who desire to leave the ranks of the anxious, fearful and despairing.

My fellow Christian be strong in the Lord. Act like you belong to Him!

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and the strength (power) of His might.”
Ephesians 6:10

“For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His…”
II Chronicles 16:9

“Be strong and let us show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God; and may the Lord do what is good in His sight.”
II Samuel 10:12

A Word for Your Week:
Actions motivated by moral courage always speak louder than words.
